INDEPENDENT DEVELOPMENT

A residential retreat shaped around landscape, light, and a slower rhythm of living, creating a quiet relationship between architecture, nature, and the everyday moments that unfold within and around the home.

Elara is a private residential retreat set within the wooded landscape of Kyoto. The project was conceived as a place of pause, where architecture could feel closely connected to its surroundings rather than separated from them.

A restrained material palette, carefully framed views, and a sequence of intimate and open spaces create a home that changes throughout the day. Natural light moves across textured surfaces while the surrounding landscape remains a constant part of the experience.

04 — STORY

A retreat designed around the quiet relationship between architecture, landscape, and light.

The design began with the character of the site: its mature trees, changing light, and distant views across the landscape. Rather than competing with these conditions, Elara is organized around them, creating moments of compression and release as the spaces unfold. Openings are positioned to frame specific views, while sheltered thresholds create a gradual transition between interior and exterior.

Natural materials and restrained forms create a home that grows quieter with time.

The architecture uses stone, timber, plaster, and glass to establish a tactile and understated character. Deep openings control the intensity of daylight, while carefully proportioned spaces create a rhythm between intimate rooms and larger areas connected to the landscape. Every material is allowed to remain legible, giving the house a sense of permanence without becoming overly formal.
